01 — The problem
Billing software has two hard requirements that pull against each other: it has to be fast enough that a queue does not notice it, and correct enough that the day’s totals reconcile. Every change has to respect both.
02 — Approach
- 01
Work inside an existing codebase and match its patterns instead of importing my own.
- 02
Pick up tasks across the stack — whatever was blocking the team that week rather than a single fixed slice.
- 03
Keep changes small and reviewable, because shared code means every diff is somebody else’s context switch.
- 04
Ask before assuming: in a team repo, the undocumented reason is usually the important one.
03 — What I built
- Feature work and bug fixes across the billing flow.
- Integration work between interface surfaces and the service layer.
- Review-ready changes that fit the team’s existing conventions.
04 — Outcome
- Contributed to a shared product codebase rather than a solo repository, which is a different and useful kind of pressure.
05 — What I learned
Joining code you did not design is its own skill. Reading before writing, matching the house style, and shipping a small correct change beats a clever large one that nobody can review.
